Originating from Jingdezhen, this Sancai Gaiwan (a traditional three-piece tea vessel consisting of a lid, bowl, and saucer) features a refined and well-proportioned silhouette. With a delicate 8.2 cm bowl diameter, it is expertly designed to concentrate the aroma of the tea. The piece presents a calm, restrained aesthetic with crisp indigo lines, serving as both a highly functional brewing vessel and a collectible miniature archive showcasing scholarly elegance.
Motif & Technique: Baimiao Ice Plum (Cracked Ice and Plum Blossom)
The exterior is adorned with the highly scholarly "Ice Plum" (冰梅 - Bingmei) motif, a classic design that originated during the Kangxi reign of the Qing Dynasty. It elegantly captures the natural scenery of early spring—plum blossoms blooming amidst thawing, cracked ice. The plum blossom symbolizes resilience, nobility, and endurance, while the breaking ice represents the arrival of spring and renewed vitality.
The highest artistic value of this piece lies in the use of the traditional Baimiao (白描 - fine line drawing) technique. The artisan foregoes heavy cobalt washes in favor of pure, confident outlines to define both the sharp geometric cracks of the ice and the soft, delicate petals of the flowers. This precise, unshaded approach demands exceptional brush control and grants the design a cool, minimalist, and deeply poetic aesthetic.
