Jingdezhen Antique-Style Hand-Painted Wood-Fired Blue & White Sancai Gaiwan – Stippled Chilong Motif

Originating from Jingdezhen, this Sancai Gaiwan (a traditional three-piece tea vessel consisting of a lid, bowl, and saucer) features an elegant, upright silhouette with a classic flared rim (撇口). Emphasizing a generous use of negative space (留白), the piece communicates a pure, restrained visual language while carrying a powerful ancient totem. It serves as both a highly functional brewing vessel and a profound, stone-like miniature cultural archive.

Motif & Technique: Stippled Chilong (Hornless Dragon) 
The exterior is adorned with the classical "Chilong" (螭龙) motif. The Chilong is an archaic, hornless dragon from ancient mythology, symbolizing auspiciousness, strength, and noble character. Its sinuous, elongated body conveys the raw and mysterious energy of antiquity. The artisan employs traditional Baimiao (fine line drawing) to outline the archaic forms, filling them meticulously using the highly demanding Stippling Technique (点工 - diangong). Instead of using conventional cobalt washes, thousands of concentrated dots are applied to render the shadows and musculature of the dragons. This highly demanding, pointillism-like approach grants the two-dimensional design an extraordinary three-dimensional tension and a texture reminiscent of weathered ancient stone rubbings.

Craftsmanship: Traditional Pine Wood-Fired Kiln (Chai Yao) 
This piece is fired using the most traditional wood-firing kilns (柴窑) in Jingdezhen. The unfired vessel is placed securely inside a saggar (a protective ceramic box) and fired using pure pine wood. Kiln masters rely on decades of experience, manually adding wood to control the temperature, which eventually peaks at 1300°C.
Unlike the predictable and uniform heating curves of modern gas kilns, a wood-fired kiln produces a natural, rhythmic temperature variation. During the intense heat, the volatilized oils from the pine wood interact with the porcelain glaze. This distinct reaction grants the porcelain an exceptionally antiqued, deeply lustrous, and "oily" finish. It is this warm, jade-like texture that makes authentic wood-fired pieces irreplaceable.
